Jeff Hardy Obituary, Putnam County, FL Death: In Loving Memory

With profound sadness, Sheriff H.D. “Gator” DeLoach informs the community of the passing of former Sheriff Jeff Hardy over the weekend.

Sheriff Hardy began his career in Putnam County as a deputy in 1991, having transferred from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office after serving in the U.S. Navy. He served with honor in the sheriff’s office until 2004, rising through the ranks to lieutenant before resigning to run for sheriff in a bid that was unsuccessful. In the following years, Sheriff Hardy worked with the Putnam County School District, where he played a key role in enhancing security measures in local schools.

In 2008, Sheriff Hardy ran again for sheriff and won, taking office in 2009. Within weeks of his new administration, he was faced with the tragic disappearance of Haleigh Cummings, a case that would become a hallmark of his tenure and remain with him for the rest of his life. Alongside this heartbreak, Hardy’s first year as sheriff brought multiple challenges, including a bold escape from the outdated and overcrowded Putnam County Jail. His response to these crises was swift, and under his leadership, the county secured approval for a new, hurricane-rated, and safer facility for both inmates and corrections deputies. The new Putnam County Jail opened in January 2016, in Hardy’s final year as sheriff.

Sheriff DeLoach, who worked alongside Sheriff Hardy throughout much of his career, fondly recalled their time together. “Jeff had a compassion for people and his first year he was tasked with navigating, I dare say, an unimaginable series of events that culminated in a perfect storm,” DeLoach said. “He was able to create a better environment for our staff, inmates, and residents, building a new jail and modernizing the office with greater accountability and transparency.”

Sheriff Hardy also demonstrated his dedication to his colleagues through the creation of the Ten-24 Foundation, which he established in 2011 after Deputy Randy Hayes was injured in the line of duty. The foundation, named after the police call for “officer in need of assistance,” continues to provide vital support to Putnam County law enforcement officers and their families.

Sheriff Hardy’s impact on the community and law enforcement will resonate for many years to come. “His commitment to our community and fellow law enforcement officers will continue to make an impact for decades to come,” DeLoach said. “He will be missed.”
