Egon Lake Obituary, Whitewood Car Accident Death: Community Mourns A Loss
Authorities have released additional details following a fatal crash that occurred Tuesday morning in Sturgis, triggered by a high-speed pursuit involving a stolen vehicle.
At approximately 10:39 a.m., law enforcement responded to reports of a stolen vehicle in the area. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver, later identified as 50-year-old Don Crisafulli of Sturgis, refused to pull over and instead sped away. The pursuit quickly escalated as the stolen Ford F-250 barreled westbound along Lazelle Street at speeds exceeding 70 mph, weaving dangerously through traffic.
Witnesses reported that Crisafulli’s reckless driving created a severe hazard to public safety as he swerved between vehicles and passed others without caution. Tragically, the chase ended when Crisafulli collided with a white Honda Accord, driven by 26-year-old Egon Lake of Whitewood, as he tried to pass traffic at high speed.
Emergency responders arrived to find both drivers trapped in their vehicles. Despite extensive rescue efforts, Lake was pronounced dead at the scene from the catastrophic injuries he sustained. His loss has left his family, friends, and the community devastated.
Crisafulli, who sustained critical injuries, was airlifted to a regional hospital. Although initially in life-threatening condition, authorities later confirmed his condition was improving. Crisafulli faces pending charges as the investigation continues.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash, while the Sturgis Police Department continues to probe the criminal aspects related to the stolen vehicle and the pursuit. The incident remains under active investigation, with further updates expected as new information emerges.
