Edward Hicks III Obituary, Birmingham, AL Fire Death: Family And Friends Mourns A Loss

The Birmingham, Alabama, community is in mourning following a devastating house fire that claimed the lives of three family members in the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 15. The tragedy has left the Green Acres neighborhood reeling in shock and grief.

The victims have been identified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office as Edward Hicks III, 49, Farintina Pleshette Hicks, 48, and their daughter, 18-year-old Laila Nicole Hicks, all residents of Birmingham. The fire, which broke out just before 2 a.m. on Avenue K, spread rapidly through the family’s home, engulfing the residence in flames.

According to investigators, a neighbor noticed the fire and urgently attempted to alert the family as the flames spread. Emergency responders arrived quickly and worked tirelessly to rescue the victims, transporting all three to UAB Hospital for emergency treatment. Tragically, despite their efforts, all three were pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Fire Marshal’s Office has launched an investigation into the cause and origin of the fire, with the Birmingham Police Department also examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are focusing on a critical detail: the home did not have a working smoke detector, which may have played a role in the rapid spread of the flames.

As news of the tragedy spreads, the Green Acres community is left heartbroken. Family, friends, and neighbors are struggling to come to terms with the loss of Edward, Farintina, and Laila, whose lives were tragically cut short.
