The community of Coquille, Oregon, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Mariah Mayfield, who tragically died in a two-vehicle collision on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, along Highway 101 in Coos County.

According to the Oregon State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 2:48 p.m. near milepost 260 when a white Mercedes E400, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes, narrowly avoided a collision with a Bandon Police Department patrol unit and another vehicle. Despite efforts by officers to intervene, the Mercedes struck a guardrail, re-entered the southbound lane, and collided head-on with Mariah’s blue Mazda Mazda3. The impact of the crash was fatal, and she was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of emergency responders.

The driver of the Mercedes, 78-year-old Bernard Cooley of Bandon, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. The highway was closed for approximately three hours as authorities documented the scene and cleared debris.
